General Radio 1423-A Decade CapacitorThe two center knobs are broken off. The shaft that broke is some kind of plastic. I used a Dremel to cut a slot in both of the broken shafts so I could turn them with a flat blade screwdriver and that works fine. You can use it as-is or disassemble the unit and replace the plastic shafts. I don't know if that would easy or not. Also included are one of the original knobs and another broken knob from some other General Radio piece of equipment that has the same hole diameter that you can use if you replace the shafts.
I connected my Instek LCR-821 and cycled each knob through all of its positions and the capacitance read as expected. The knobs all turn smoothly. Photos show the residual capacitance with the knobs at 0 and one reading for each knob at a different position. Actually the far right knob has no "0". It has a blank instead of a zero. Just noticed that in the photo of the 2 nF setting the number is obscured by the wire. The knob setting is 2.
I also included a couple of photos out of the case and with the covers removed so you can see that it's in good condition.
The paper on top is cal data from a Cal lab in 2004. The 100 pF steps are marked as being slightly out of tolerance. You can see the trimmer caps inside so it would not be difficult to adjust the 100 pF range to be in spec. I didn't make any adjustments.
This unit is works pretty good but because of the broken shafts I'll start it at a lower price. It's fairly heavy so shipping isn't cheap.
The auction is for the General Radio 1423-A only. The LCR meter is not included.
