Title:
Antique Celadon Green Glazed Swankhalok Pottery Figure, Si Satchanalai kiln, Sukhothai Province. 18/19th C.
Description:
An amazing and extremely rare example of Thai pottery from the kilns of Si Satchanalai, which is around the old village of Sawankhalok in north central Thailand. Creatively sculpted as a single piece of pottery with two onrately carved bowls positioned one inside another, uniquely potted with a Thai village figure kneeling on one knee, the other tucked beneath him, supporting a large water jar on his shoulders, as he gazes to the sky. His face is serene, eyes glaring, ridged eyebrows, and bow-shaped lips smiling. He is unclothed above the waist wearing a short stylized sampot, armlets, bracelets and anklelets, with a traditional head-wrap covering his head.
The pottery is decorated with double bands at the rim and footrim, and incised striated grooves on the bowls exterior, along with incised double bands and cross-hatched patterns accenting the interior of each bowl, colored in a rich celadon green glaze, lightly crackled, accented with contrasting portions of unglazed biscuit throughout the sculpted figure, footrim, and at the inverted base.
Truely an amazing surviving example of Thai Pottery from the historic kilns of Si Satchanalai, wonderfully preserved without repairs. There is a small blemish at the outter bowls rim, probably from time of conception, and a very tiny chip atop the rim of the inner bowl.
